Visiting Creußen's 23rd Pottery Market

The second weekend in July was dedicated to the pottery market in the stoneware town of Creußen. The Upper Franconian city in the Bayreuth district looks back on a lively tradition of craftsmanship and carefully cultivates this heritage. There is even a separate museum dedicated to “Creußen stoneware”, which displays many exhibits in precise chronological order.

The pottery market opened on a rainy market square on Sunday at 10 a.m. But the weather clearly did not dampen things too much as colourful ceramics were presented by good-humoured ceramists. For many, this was also the first market and the joy of encounters with marketgoers was evident in everyone. Even if the walkway was impeccably implemented with distancing rules in accordance with the requirements of the health authority, there were many interesting encounters with some of our long-term kiln customers:

Gisela Wirth, the owner of the “Bunte Truhe” shop in Creußen, has been making colourful ceramics in her ROHDE kiln for many years and selling them at markets and of course in her shop, which was impossible for a long time during the pandemic and still difficult.

We encountered a truly splendid colour experience at the booth of ceramic designer Birgit Palt. The good mood of the exhibitor couple rubbed off on everyone and you could only marvel at the surfaces and patterns designed with countless dots.

The beaming faces were even more noticeable than usual this year, and that was the case at Ina Liefländer's stand too. The most striking thing here was the natural design, with the ceramics and decoration in complete harmony – and then there was turquoise art, the colour that we of course pay special attention to.

Mr & Mrs Bauer have also been firing their ceramics in a ROHDE kiln for many years and conjure up jolly garden ceramics and lovable gift ideas. The ingenuity of the artists was incredibly impressive here.

We would like to thank the exhibitors for the pleasant conversations and the permission to take photos. We wish everyone continued success!
